Updated at 11.18am:
Hong Kong Disneyland will open in phases starting in early
August, the government said.

The theme park, a joint venture between The Walt Disney Co
and the Hong Kong government, had been originally slated
to open on September 12, but the park will now launch its
operations in stages, the government said in a statement
late on Tuesday.

Details were expected at a news conference later on
Wednesday.

Hong Kong taxpayers are footing the bulk of the US$3.5
billion (HK$27.3 billion) construction bill for Hong Kong
Disneyland, and critics question whether the government
got a good deal. Officials have said the park will boost
unemployment and tourism.

The park is expected to draw droves of tourists from
neighbouring mainland China.

Fighting the cause of Chinas Uighurs
By Kate McGeown
BBC News

Rebiya Kadeer
Ms Kadeer is on a tour of Europe to campaign for Uighur rights
Rebiya Kadeer was once a successful businesswoman in Chinas Xinjiang province.

But she was imprisoned in 2000 for leaking state secrets, and since her release in March she has been concentrating on a very different goal.

"Since I came out of jail, I have never stopped fighting for the freedom of my people," she told the BBC News website.

Ms Kadeer is a Uighur - a member of an eight million-strong ethnic group which she claims suffers severe repression from the authorities in Beijing.

Now based in the US, she devotes all her time to publicising the plight of the Uighurs - and she is currently touring Europe to bring attention to their cause.

"I believe the Uighur people are the most persecuted people on the planet," Ms Kadeer said.

"In prison, I personally witnessed the torture and persecution of many Uighurs who were totally innocent of the crimes they were said to have committed."

Sacked radio host vows to speak out
South China Morning Post

JIMMY CHEUNG

Talk-show host Wong Yuk-man spoke out last night about his
sacking from Commercial Radio, vowing to strike back and
give his version of events on RTHK today.

News of his dismissal on Saturday sparked a media frenzy
and prompted former Democratic Party chairman Martin Lee
Chu-ming to warn it was a blow to freedom of speech.

Wong said: "My heart is very peaceful right now. What
needs to happen will eventually happen. But I wont let
them [Commercial Radio] walk away like this," he told the
South China Morning Post.

He said he would give an account in an RTHK current
affairs radio programme tonight.

SHANGHAI, July 7 (Reuters) - Chinas quotas for most categories of restricted textile exports to the United States are nearly full and exporters should refrain from further shipments, a Chinese trade body said in a statement to its members.

Chinese exports of cotton pants, cotton knit shirts, and underwear will reach their upper limits within a few days, the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles said in the statement on its Web site (www.ccct.org.cn) posted late on Wednesday.

Exports of synthetic pants, synthetic knit shirts and mens woven shirts are likely to reach their limits by July or early August, the association said.

Only one category - cotton yarn - is likely to stay open through year-end, it said.

Chinese textile exports surged early this year, triggering trade disputes with the United States and European Union, after a decade-long system of global quotas was abolished.

Washington unilaterally imposed quotas on certain categories of Chinese textiles in May. Under the terms of Chinas entry to the World Trade Organization, member countries can limit imports from China if they are disrupting domestic industries.

Growth in textile imports from China in those categories is limited to 7.5 percent above their level for the twelve months ending in February.

Spiralling towards silence
- by Albert Cheng King-hon is a directly elected legislator and
former radio talk-show host.

Despite what Commercial Radio says, Wongs case is much
more than just a labour dispute. Lecturer Ivan Choi
Chi-keung has claimed that outspokenness no longer has a
market in Hong Kong. The days of red-hot talk-back shows,
he said, are gone. But he has missed the point.

What is really at stake is freedom of speech. Unlike other
[color] enterprises, commercial broadcasters are given a
government licence to ride the public airwaves, and are
thus expected to fulfil their social obligations and
safeguard freedom of speech.

Commercial Radios move makes no commercial sense, either.
According to news reports, the tally of listeners for
breakfast current-affairs talk shows dropped by 200,000
after several popular hosts were silenced. Both the
ratings and advertising income for Commercial Radio have
plummeted.

The Hong Kong Economic Journal is now the only remaining
independent news organisation in the Chinese media
landscape. The other print and electronic media have
revised their editorial policies to a greater or lesser
degree, to fend off opposing views and appease the
authorities. Some media owners have even exploited their
positions to cultivate business relationships in mainland
China and pursue their own hidden agendas.
